🚿 Jailed: The Rogue Suffolk Plumber Who Left Vulnerable Homeowners Thousands Out of Pocket

A plumber from Suffolk who conned vulnerable customers out of £30,000 and left them with unsafe and unfinished work has been jailed.
Grant Phillips, 45, of Heron Road, Ipswich, admitted to fraudulent trading and was sentenced to 26 months in prison at Ipswich Crown Court.
Between April 2021 and October 2023, Phillips took payments from 12 customers for work that was either substandard, never completed, or dangerously installed.

⚖️ Judge: “Your Treatment of Customers Was Appalling”

During sentencing, Judge Nicola Fitches condemned Phillips’ actions:

“Your unfinished and unsafe work had the potential to cause serious injury or worse, and your treatment of customers was appalling.”

Victims remain more than £22,000 out of pocket, and the judge described Phillips as “persistently dishonest.”

“You lied to victims, took their money knowing it wasn’t being used for their projects, and caused distress, fear, and mistrust,” she said.

Phillips, who has 10 previous convictions from 13 offences, repeatedly delayed proceedings — arriving without a lawyer and even hinting he might change his guilty plea.

He will serve at least half his sentence behind bars.

💧 Three Fake Businesses, One Rogue Trader

Phillips operated under three different trading names:

  • Superdry Plumbing & Drainage

  • Rhino Plumb

  • Plumb Fix

Some victims were elderly or disabled, hiring him for accessibility improvements to their bathrooms. Others paid thousands for home upgrades that were later deemed unsafe and required expensive repairs.

He also took money for materials that were never ordered or unsuitable for the job.

One victim described Phillips as a “rogue trader who caused huge financial losses, stress, and sleepless nights for many Suffolk people.”

🧾 Trading Standards: “Justice Has Finally Been Done”

After multiple complaints to Citizens Advice and Action Fraud, Suffolk Trading Standards launched a full investigation that led to Phillips’ conviction.

Sharon Titford-Keller, Senior Officer at Suffolk Trading Standards, said outside court:

“It’s been a long time coming, but justice has finally been done.
This sentence sends a strong message — Suffolk Trading Standards will take robust action against fraudulent rogue traders.”

“It’s not compensation, but it’s an impactful outcome, and hopefully the victims will feel some relief.”
